HERE'S WHAT'S HAPPENING IN OUR COMMUNITY!

Meet Our Members: Chantel Ruf

1. Why did you join CrossFit FUNCTION?

I joined CrossFit in August of 2019. I thought about joining since January of 2019 but thought my schedule was too busy with work full time and parenting 3 kids. My coworkers talked about CrossFit at work and the workouts that they completed, and I was like “geez I need to try something else besides spin.” I had been going to spin classes for almost 2 years and seemed to have plateaued and CrossFit seemed like a good fit to add some muscle to my cardio.

2. What’s been your biggest accomplishment at CFF?

My biggest accomplishment at CFF (so far) is deadlifting 190lbs. Before joining I didn’t even know what a deadlift was or the equipment needed to do it. Never in the world did I think I would be able to lift something that heavy.

3. What are you working on now?

Currently I am working on maintaining my upper body strength (which was basically non existent before joining CrossFit). I’m very hesitant with some of the weights and movements because I’m scared of hurting myself. The coaching in all the classes on proper technique during the warm up and then recommendations throughout the workouts have made me feel more comfortable and confident to try the heavier weight.

4. What’s your favourite CFF memory?

My favourite CrossFit memory is when CFF did “Lift Off For The Soup Haven.” It was just before Christmas, and you paid $20 and for the chance to lift heavy and possibly make a PR on lifts that we had been practicing leading up to this day. There are 3 reasons why this makes it my favourite memory. (1) CFF Matched and donated the money to the Soup Haven, giving back to the community in which it serves. (2) You went through your attempts at each lift. Having friends who you have worked out with in the WOD encouraging you, pushing you to try a little bit more.  (3) Just sitting on the turf afterward taking in the atmosphere. Watching other members lifting heavy weight (like Megan doing 300lb in what I think was a back squat) was mind blowing, how strong your body actually is, and what it allows you to accomplish when done correctly.

5. What motivates you to continue training at CFF?

I continue with CFF because I made a commitment to myself to stay healthy both physically and mentally. I really don’t know what I did with the hour of 4:30-5:30 before joining CrossFit. This time has been slotted into my routine. I am still able to juggle working full time, shift work, kids activities, home life and exercise into my day. I continue to walk through those doors even on the days I am exhausted because I know after that hour of working out, getting in a short visit with my CrossFit friends, even just listening to the conversation between every one else, I will be able to carry on with the rest of my evening with a smile on my face.
